Queensland Ambulance Service Education Centre (QASEC)

All Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) education and development is coordinated and managed by the Queensland Ambulance Service Education Centre (QASEC) located at the Kedron Park Emergency Services Facility in Brisbane, Australia. QASEC has a team of 30 busy people who, in conjunction with the regional education teams, service approximately 2000 personnel, both uniformed and non-uniformed, in helping them become proficient and capable in their roles. QASEC develops, conducts and evaluates all off-the-job training as well as supervises and, where necessary, assists with regional on-the-job training.

QAS is a Registered Training Organisation under the Department of Employment and Training. QASEC is an “in-house” educational unit that delivers a range of accredited and non-accredited courses. The education team extends to a wider team of on-road ambulance officers, medical, nursing and other specialists who combine to ensure our recruits, existing officers and advanced care personnel are safe with patients and expert in ambulance patient care and other support roles.

The strategic priority of ambulance education is firstly to ensure our people keep up with contemporary clinical and patient care practice as workers in the dynamic and rapidly changing field of pre-hospital care. In future, we aim to elevate the standard qualification of our officers to degree level, in accordance with worldwide best practice for health care practitioners.

QAS Education is divided into five broad areas:

QASEC is assisted by seven Regional Staff Development Units (RSDU) who each have a team of managers, educators and support personnel that collectively cover the state of Queensland. Although most accredited training occurs under the auspices of the QAS Registered Training Organisation, QASEC works in partnership with a number of external education providers including:

QAS meets the requirements of vocational education and training through a competency-based approach. This covers the preparation, delivery and assessment of the knowledge, skills and attitudes of its personnel and their capacity to apply these attributes to operational service.

QAS Education is delivered through face to face learning, and also through distance education and flexible delivery methods including the On-Line Campus. These include print-based resources and electronic multimedia, and incorporates both on- and off-the-job training.
