Local Ambulance Committees

One of the aims of the QAS is to serve the Community, and ever since the establishment of the first ambulance centre just over 100 years ago, the QAS has maintained a strong link with the local communities. Up until the formation of the State-wide Queensland Ambulance Service in 1991, ambulance committees oversaw the provision of ambulance services throughout the State. Since 1991, Local Ambulance Committees (LACs) have been formed in order to maintain the links between the ambulance service and the community. This allows a two-way channel for information, providing the community the opportunity to provide feedback on performance and community issues to the QAS, and also allowing the QAS to provide information to the community. Because the groups are comprised of local community members, the QAS is able to gain important advice and information relevant to their local areas.

Nineteen LACs operate throughout the Northern Region QAS. Local Ambulance Committees in the Northern Region are important in keeping the Regional staff abreast of community issues, fundraising and in management of funds in the local communities. They ensure that funds they raise remain in their local community and benefit their local ambulance service. They are also pro-active in raising issues of concern, such as service provision in local areas and training of officers.

LAC members also play an important role in providing support for officers, particularly those who are new to the region or local area, and especially those in single officer and/or remote stations. LAC members can assist the new officer with support networks, provide advice on the local area and assist in establishing links within the community.
